Director of Metis Classics and its primary instructor, Ed taught at the university level for close to a decade, and has substantial experience in designing and teaching courses on ancient languages, specifically Ancient Greek and Latin. His teaching experience also includes a wide variety of Classics courses, such the Greek and Latin roots of the English language, Greek and Roman mythology, and ancient literary classics in translation. He has particular interests in mythology, ancient religion, Greek and Roman poetry, and exploring the connections between ancient and modern literature, and has several academic publications to his credit.
The impetus for the formation of Metis Classics was Ed’s own nontraditional pathway into the field of Classics, which began with independent study but then moved to a more formal educational setting. He founded Metis Classics with the goal of assisting individuals who, for a variety of reasons, may have a desire to learn a classical language and to study the main components of ancient cultures but who lack the local learning resources to reach their objectives.
Teaching style:
Ed strives to create a relaxed learning environment that encourages open communication. Although learning the language is the primary mission, this pursuit will inevitably lead to a greater examination of ancient culture. He always tailors instruction to an individual student’s focus of interest, whether that be the desire to read Augustan poetry, the histories of Caesar, and philosophical and political treatises in the original language, or simply to learn Latin for any number of pragmatic reasons.
Credentials:
PhD in Classics, University of Washington; MA in Classics, University of Washington; MA in English, Northwestern University
